A Child Needs Help

Request Legal Help
for a Child

When a child’s safety or future is at risk, legal help may be necessary.

The Center for the Rights of Abused Children enforces children’s rights in court through both direct representation and precedent-setting public interest litigation. We represent children in high-risk cases and connect families to experienced attorneys through our National Legal Network.

When a Child
May Need
Our Help

Every child’s circumstances are unique. You should consider seeking specialized legal advocacy when a child’s rights, safety, or future are at risk

A Child Has No Meaningful Voice in Court

A child has no attorney or a child’s attorney has not met with them, does not return calls, or is not advocating for the child’s requests for safety, placement, or family.

Safety Concerns Are Ignored or Minimized

A child remains in—or is returned to—a dangerous situation despite known risks, reports of harm, or repeated system involvement.

A Placement Causes Harm

A foster home, group facility, or institutional placement is unsafe or otherwise not in the child’s interests.

A Child Is Stuck in Legal Limbo

Court delays, inaction, or procedural failures leave a child waiting years for permanency, stability, or resolution.

Family Connections Are Unjustly Blocked

A child is separated from siblings, grandparents, or other relatives due to delay, bureaucracy, or rigid policies not in the child’s interests.

A Child’s Education Is Being Disrupted or Neglected

A child is falling behind in school because of repeated placement changes, lack of enrollment, inappropriate special education services, school discipline, or failure to provide transportation, tutoring, or accommodations required by law.

A Child’s Property or Benefits Are Taken or Misused

A child’s Social Security, survivor, or disability benefits are diverted to pay for their care instead of being protected for their future.

Public Interest
Litigation

Some cases reveal deeper failures—laws that allow harm, delays that destroy childhoods, or practices that violate children’s fundamental rights. In these moments, we may pursue public interest litigation and reform to protect not just one child, but many.
